How Many Chairs Do You Really Need? A Practical Space Planning Guide

Whether you’re outfitting a church, nonprofit, school, event venue, or community center, proper seating layout starts with math — not guesswork.

Here’s how to plan accurately.

Step 1: Know Your True Chair Width

Our standard chair measures 18.9 inches wide.

When connected using side connectors, allow approximately ½ inch between chairs.

That means your real planning width per seat is 19.4 inches.

Example:

10 connected chairs:

  • 19.4” × 10 = 194”

  • 194” ÷ 12 = 16.17 feet per row

This gives you precise row measurements without overcrowding.

Step 2: Plan Your Room Layout

For comfortable spacing:

  • Allow 36 inches for main aisles

  • Allow 24–36 inches between rows, depending on traffic flow needs

If you're maximizing capacity, you can tighten spacing slightly — but comfort and accessibility should always be considered.

Step 3: Plan for Flexibility

Stackable chairs allow you to:

  • Reconfigure rooms quickly

  • Host multiple types of events

  • Store efficiently when not in use

Step 4: Order Smart

We recommend ordering 5–10% extra chairs beyond your average attendance or event size. Growth, special events, and flexibility matter.

At Foundation Supply Company, we don’t just sell chairs — we help organizations plan wisely. Accurate measurements upfront prevent costly mistakes later.
